Old
Southwest, Inc. Committees
Old Southwest, Inc.
is comprised of several standing and special committees that oversee
the projects and objectives of the organization. These committees are
chartered in the bylaws of the corporation. Standing committees are
permanent committees of the organization. Special committees are
chartered by the President or Board of Directors, and are created for
special purposes over a limited period of time.

Executive
Committee: The Executive Committee is chaired by the President
of the corporation. It consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary,
and Treasurer. The Executive Committee prepares notices, prepares
agendas, recommends actions to the Board of Directors and the
membership, recommends budgets to the Board of Directors and the
membership, and recommends work plans and objectives to the Board
of Directors.

Alexander-Gish
House Committee: The Alexander-Gish House Committee is chaired
by a director of the organization, and consists of appointed
committee members from the membership. The committee is
responsible for the care and upkeep of the Alexander-Gish House
property, which is maintained by Old Southwest, Inc. The committee
is tasked with maintaining liaison with the City of Roanoke
concerning the property, administering the annual budget for the
Alexander-Gish House, managing the rental of the studio apartment
and special events areas of the property, recommending capital
investment plans and budgets, and creating other
recommendations/plans for the maintenance and improvement of the
Alexander-Gish House.

Parlor Tour
Committee: The Parlor Tour Committee is chaired by a member of
the organization and consists of appointed committee members from
the membership. The committee is tasked with the organization,
administration, and execution of the Annual Holiday Parlor Tour of
Homes. The committee recruits volunteers and house docents for
participation in the tour, solicits corporate and private
sponsorships and support, schedules and promotes the Parlor Tour,
prepares Parlor Tour budgets and recommendations to the Executive
Committee.

Newsletter
Committee: The Newsletter Committee is chaired by a member of
the organization and consists of appointed committee members from
the membership. The committee is tasked with preparing and
distributing a newsletter at least bi-monthly to the general
membership. The committee is also responsible for administering
the newsletter budget and preparing newsletter recommendations and
budgets to the Executive Committee.

Neighborhood
Preservation Committee: The Preservation Committee is chaired
by a member of the organization and consists of appointed
committee members from the membership. The committee attends to
local government actions which affect the Old Southwest
neighborhood, acts as a liaison between Old Southwest, Inc.
members and government authorities, recommends actions to the
Board of Directors designed to protect the character of Old
Southwest and the H-2 historic district, and reports to the
membership annual concerning neighborhood preservation.

Nominating
Committee: The Nominating Committee will consist of three
voting members elected by the Board of Directors. The Nominating
Committee is responsible for preparing a full or partial slate of
nominees for Officer and Director positions within the
organization for action by the membership at the corporations
annual meeting in November. The committee is also tasked with
holding annual elections to fill vacancies within the Corporation,
and prepares recommendations for action by the Board of Directors
to fill vacancies on the Board of Directors.

Membership
Committee: The Membership Committee is chaired by a voting
member of the organization and consists of appointed committee
members from the membership. The committee is tasked with
maintaining membership information, ensuring that membership
status is kept current, advising the Treasurer about status of
member dues, and recruiting new members.

Committees

Grants
Committee: The Grants Committee is chaired by a member of the
organization and consists of appointed committee members from the
membership. The committee is tasked with writing grants and
soliciting public monies that will benefit the organization and
neighborhood, working with local and state authorities during the
grant solicitation and procurement process, and creating reports
and recommendations to the Executive Committee and Board of
Directors about the status of grants and grant opportunities.

Spruce
Up Your Historic Home Grant Program Sub-Committee: This
committee is tasked with administering funds related to the
Spruce Up Your Historic Home Grant Program, which was
established in 2007 with Federal grant funds through the
Community Development Block Grant program. Funds from this
program are used for owner-resident exterior home repair and
improvement in the Old Southwest Historic District.

Parks
Committee: The Parks Committee is chaired by a member of the
organization and consists of appointed committee members from the
membership. The Parks Committee is tasked with creating and
implementing recommendations for improvement and sustainment of
public green spaces within the neighborhood.

Relations Committee: The Public Relations Committee is chaired
by a director of the organization and consists of appointed
committee members from the membership. The Public Relations
Committee is responsible for preparing a comprehensive
communications program that will keep both members and non-members
aware of the benefits and opportunities offered through membership.
In addition, the committee will work to improve the overall public
perception of the Old Southwest Historic District, working with
media, local businesses and realtors, as well as residents to
project a positive image of the neighborhood and Old Southwest,
Inc. The committee works directly under the supervision and
guidance of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.

Safety
Committee: The Safety Committee is chaired by a member of the
organization and consists of appointed committee members from the
membership. The Safety Committee is tasked with working as a
liaison between the membership and local authorities regarding
public safety issues in Old Southwest. The committee prepares
recommendations and budgets to the Board of Directors concerning
Old Southwest, Inc. safety projects and educational campaigns. The
committee is also responsible for notifying the membership of any
safety and security hazards within the neighborhood in a timely
manner.

Special
Events Committee: The Special Events Committee is chaired by a
member of the organization and consists of appointed committee
members from the membership. The Special Events Committee
schedules, organizes, and conducts various neighborhood activities
that support neighborhood growth, encourage resident participation
in Old Southwest, Inc, and strengthens neighborly relations. The
Special Events Committee will work with the Public Relations
Committee to ensure that information about planned events is
distributed in a timely manner to the membership.
