The old census records are also an excellent place to find information on former home owners. They list sexes, ages, relationships and occupations of the inhabitants of the home.
In the near future the OSW House Files will be moved from the Gish House to the Virginia Room at the Main Library. This will mean easier access to those wanting to research their property. |

I have been doing more research and I discovered the Sanborn Maps. They are available in the VIrginia Room and also online at salemlibrary.info
I found the street of my house and It was not on the 1907 maps but It did exist on the 1919 map. So the build time should be in between those dates. I also researched some of the earliest owners and found the census information for that family. The only photo I have uncovered so far was a photo from 1981. |

Elmer,
Awesome! I really enjoy this program that Curtis unveiled last year. I am sure you've likely searched through the Roanoke City Directories. But for anyone else, these proved most valuable in narrowing down the exact year my home was built. I am curious though as far as accessing the microfilm and searching up photos in the Virginia Room. How difficult is it researching your home through this channel? I can easily see myself enjoying an all day/weekend in here. On a side note, does anyone know if access to the Roanoke Times Library is permitted? I know Belinda Harris is in charge of it, but haven't made an effort to ask if this is something available to the public. |
