Default Question

Hi everyone! I am on OSW member over on Mountain Ave. Does anyone have any suggestions of how one would go about requesting that the City reconsider a no turn on red sign?

I would love to be able to turn right on red at the intersection of Elm and First during non-busy times of the day. I can understand why this might be a good idea during morning and evening commute time, but it's a bit silly the rest of the time, but I live in fear of tickets! I noticed that the "no turn on red" at the bottom of Mountain (coming off Jefferson) was removed, but have no idea why or how.

Maybe it is not possible or safe to give us that option to turn right on red at the Elm Ave intersection, but any suggestions of how to approach it would be great.

Parker, welcome! I would suggest emailing Mark Jamison with the city- (Mark.Jamison@roanokeva.gov) If Mark cannot help you, he can at least point you in the right direction. I am all for trying to remove "Many" of these signs. I attended the Leadership College a couple years ago and posed the same question to the director at the time of transportation about too many of these being all over the place, but didn't get the answer that I was hoping for. In any event, there are too many of the "No Turn on Red" signs in the city- By the way, hope to see you at the next neighborhood meeting Jan. 17th 7pm at the Gish House in the back of highland park- Also, the next Leadership conference is happening in early spring. Check out the site for future info-
Thanks

The City can do so many amazing things! Staff in the City doesn't like to be intimidated or chastised--this is normal.

I was able to get a handicapped parking space in front of my house for my 87 year old mother. It took some time, but they did it free!

Public servants are often dealt with as though , they were "public slaves!".
A bit of courtsey and common sense can go a long way! If you can't get what you want, after approaching it this way, take it back to OSW!

Best Wishes,

Parker,
Hopefully you can get the "No Right Turns on Red" sign completely remove. Today I notice one saying "No right Turns on Red between 4 & 7 PM". If the city is worried about rush minute this may be a compromise.

"Rush minute" - I love it!

Just to let everyone know - the City very nicely and quickly responded to my inquiry. The verdict is that the uphill part of the intersection with the blind oncoming traffic represents a hazzard enough that they are not willing to remove the right turn restriction. Fair enough.

I was very impressed at the responsiveness and courtesy of Mark Jameison of Roanoke City.

Thumbs up Handicapped Parking

I am so happy to hear that Parker's issue was settled to his satisfaction!

Mark Jameison was a godsend to me! I wanted a handicapped space in front of my building for my mother--it isn't her exclusive space, but she thinks it is!

I contacted Tim Taylor. He researched it and gave me Mark. It was done very quickly!

THIS IS REAL IMPORTANT!!!!

If you know a person with a disability, who needs better access to their home,
please call, Mark--he understands!

Thanks,

Barbara
