FEBRUARY HOME OF THE MONTH
115 Mountain Avenue SW Owners: Bob Clement and Tim Taylor
Originally built in 1900, by J.H. Marsteller, a native of Richland, PA, this house has a long and proud history of contributing to our beautiful neighborhood. Born on September 10, 1866, Mr. Marsteller and his family called this Mountain Avenue building home, until around 1920 when Mr. Marsteller sold the home to relocate to the Grandin area. The new owners converted the home into apartments, walling over archways, removing pocket doors and fretwork, enclosing hallways, adding small kitchens, full baths, and small closets for the rental units. During the next 84 years, the home slowly suffered its decline, losing its grand wrap around front porch, its raised relief tile in the vestibule, light fixtures, decorative door hardware, wrought iron gates, and its most unique feature, a pair of carved marble lions that now reside in front of the Lions Eye Bank at the corner of 5th and Elm.
Bob and Tim purchased the property in January 2004, began renovations in April, and moved into their renovated single family residence in January 2005. They hope to complete their renovation by successfully negotiating the return of the lions to their original home as Marsteller intended. They officially moved back into their home in January 2005 after considerable work. Exterior features include the home’s front steps, front pedestals, porch columns and window keystones that are all carved from white marble. Key interior features include, the foyer and front rooms inlay parquet floor with its interlocking design made of various types of wood.
