NEWS AND INFORMATION - What's Happening in Old Southwest and the City of Roanoke
MKB Realtors and Sherwin Williams sponsor an OSW "Help A Neighbor" Event We had an astounding number of volunteers come out from all over the neighborhood to help paint the home at 414 Highland on April 21st. What a difference a few coats of paint make! Over 40 people tricked through over the course of the day. Volunteers started at 7:00 am and painted through 7:00 pm. Here are just a few photos to hold you over until additional shots are added later this week. Be sure to look for the article in the Roanoke Times about our success!

Revised ARB Guidelines Coming Soon, Public Hearing Scheduled: The City of Roanoke and the Architectural Review Board are in the process of revising the ARB Design Guidelines that govern architecture and building design within the H-2 Historic District. OSW sources have informed up that a public hearing about the changes will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:00pm at the Highland Park Elementary School. Additional news about the hearing will be posted as we learn further details.
OSW Easter Egg Hunt a great success!- April 9th, 2007: Plenty of neighbors came out to the OSW annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, despite chilly temperatures and blustery winds! About 20 children of all ages participated in the hunt for over 800 candy filled eggs and a few special "golden" prize eggs. We hope that everybody had a great time!
MKB Realtors and Sherwin Williams sponsor an OSW "Help A Neighbor" Event- March 26th, 2007: Old Southwest, Sherwin Williams Paint, and MKB Realtors are teaming up to lend a hand, but we still need YOU! On Saturday April 21st, we'll be throwing a painting party for an elderly neighbor whose exterior paint has fallen into disrepair. The house is a small cottage located at 414 Highland Avenue. We'll be pressure washing and doing most of the prep work on the house prior to the 21st, so all you need to do is show up and lend a hand! Painting starts at 8am and we hope to be finished by 4pm. Sunday the 22nd is the planned "rain date" for the event. More information will follow and be posted to the website as we get closer to the 21st, so stay tuned, or call Marla Robertson 540-400-2819. Old Southwest Takes "Best Overall Unit" Award for the St. Patrick's Day Parade/Celebration - March 18th, 2007: The residents of Old Southwest turned out in force for the Annual St. Patrick's Day festivities in Downtown Roanoke yesterday! Despite the cold weather (which even included the occasional snow flurry), the turnout was great with over 20 residents coming out to walk in the parade or ride the neighborhood's float. Our St. Patrick's Day themed Birthday Cake (celebrating Roanoke's 125th anniversary), was a big hit! Not only did it attract attention to our neighborhood, but it was also noticed by the judges of the float competition - We took best overall out of approximately 100 organizations participating in the parade! A proud day for OSW and just a hint at the fellowship that makes us the best neighborhood in all of Roanoke! A big thanks to everybody who helped build the float and to everybody that came out yesterday! Stay tuned for pictures!
Safety Committee Update - March 15th, 2007: Have you done a recent fire safety check in your home? Daylight Savings Time is upon us! That means that it's time to check your smoke detectors to make sure that they work! While you're at it, why not take a few seconds to change the battery? That's definitely one item that you don't want dead batteries in- after all, they can save your life! Did you know that the City of Roanoke offers FREE home fire safety inspections, including your fireplace and chimney? Did you know that Roanoke also offers FREE smoke detectors and FREE installation for residents? If you haven't taken advantage of this service, do so today! For more information:
With warmer weather upon us, it is likely that some of our "usual suspects" will be out and about the neighborhood. The Roanoke City Police have requested that residents keep an eye open for suspicious activity, both during the day and the nighttime hours. If you see or suspect any illegal activities such as drug deals, solicitation/prostitution, trespassing, or other public nuisance issues, please call 911 immediately and ask for the City Police to check it out. Remember, we are the front line of defense and the best source of intelligence for our public service officers. Without our interaction the likely hood of them actually witnessing a crime decreases significantly. (Remember, in most cases, the Police need to see an infraction for charges to hold up). Finally, the City of Roanoke is offering free workshops for Women. The two hour long interactive workshops entitled "Improving your Personal Safety" are designed to be relaxed and informative ways that women can increase their personal security awareness and reduce vulnerablility. These workshops are being held at local libraries and refreshments will be served:
That's all for this update! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Safety Committee at safety@oldsouthwestinc.com or the Safety Committee chair (Josh Shields).
