WELCOME! - A Message from Old Southwest President, Jeff Campbell

Friends and Neighbors,

Welcome and thank you for taking the time to visit Virginia ’s Premiere Historic District, Old Southwest.  The neighborhood of Old Southwest is a living celebration of historic preservation.  One of Roanoke’s oldest neighborhoods, Old Southwest is a short walk to the heart of Roanoke’s up and coming downtown area where you can enjoy art and culture, dinner and a show, or a leisurely stroll through one of Virginia’s oldest functioning farmers’ market’s.   Since it’s resurgence in the 1970’s Old Southwest has become one of Roanoke ’s desirable neighborhoods in which to call home.  Old Southwest is also very lucky to have an active and involved neighborhood organization, one that takes pride in making our neighborhood the best place to live, work and visit here in the City of Roanoke. 

Each month throughout the year there are social events, activities and meetings planned to bring the community together.  Be sure and visit the events portion of the website to get information on events scheduled in the days and weeks to come.  Some of the events we’ve held already this year are as follows: Participation in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, in which we brought home our second trophy, our annual Easter Eggstravaganza Hunt, where nice weather brought out some excited young folks, our Help a Neighbor Event, where we worked on 2 homes in OSW, and lets not forget the great Picnic in the Park, where the children (and child within) enjoyed a huge inflatable obstacle course and shared a great meal neighborly fellowship.  

We’ve also received recognition recently for some of the out-reach and social efforts in Old Southwest.  In 2007 the organization was awarded the Virginia Statewide Neighborhood Organization of the year by the Virginia Statewide Neighborhood Conference for its efforts.  Additionally, this year Old Southwest Inc. received a national award from Neighborhoods USA for its social revitalization efforts with emphasis on our “Food with Friends” event (for information on this monthly event, please see our event calendar page). 

We hope that by visiting us today you are now one step closer to calling the beautiful neighborhood of Old Southwest, home.  Come home to Old Southwest!
